Indrajith Sukumaran is no stranger to romantic love. One of his most popular roles was as campus Romeo Pius in Classmates. In Amen, he was the embodiment of St. Valentine trying to bring a loving couple together. His roles aside, the actor believes in all love that runs deep. This Valentine’s Day, he picks scenes that show all colours of romance—the longing, giving, loneliness, passion, and an all-encompassing warmth. Love is for keeps, he says.
Climax of Innale: Narendran waits expectantly, scanning their wedding photos, lost in their happy memories of togetherness. Just then, she enters the room, smiling, and offers him tea. He looks to her for any sign of recognition and finds none. He sits there blankly for a few minutes, completely broken inside, gets up, and leaves without a backward glance. Letting go of your love … isn’t that what real love is all about?
Thoovanathumpikal beach scene: A deliriously drunk Jayakrishnan and Clara are lying on the beach, caressed by the waves. She talks about Radha and suddenly Jayakrishnan goes on a confessional mood—he asks her to marry him, to get over his guilt. And she plays up to his fantasy knowing all too well that they can never be together. Talk about forbidden love.
Aniyathipravu: Sudhi and Mini have parted ways for the sake of their families’ happiness. Reality is yet to sink in, when Sudhi’s parents decide to return Mini’s gold chain. Both put on a graceful face, yet unsure whether to smile wholeheartedly. As Sudhi’s mother (the beautiful Srividya) sets eyes on Mini, you can see that she is overcome by a sense of loss. So does Mini’s mother, when she sees Sudhi. As they get ready to leave, the mother asks the boy’s mother to give Mini her blessings. That’s the trigger for all hell to break loose. Srividya tears up and finally breaks down with, “Njanenthu paranja avaley anugrahikkendathu? Enikku thanneykku, njan ponnu poley valarthikkolam”. “Eduthondu poykko. Avaldey chekkaney avakkum koduthekku,” replies the matriarch, played by KPAC Lalitha. What a fitting finale to that love story!
Dil Chahta Hain: Akash has always been a little too sure of himself. He sneered at love, ran away from commitment and really believed that love was for losers. So, when it finally hits him, he is totally unprepared for it. He denies it at first, but reality soon checks in. Overwhelmed by his love for Shalini, the reality of having lost her is too much for him. Akash lets it out. He weeps. And your heart goes out to him.
Roja: Shenbagam pleads with him to reject her. Rishi is at his wits end. When his mom and the girl’s family look at him expectantly, he notices Roja praying fervently. “Enakkantha ponnu pudikkum.” And there begins an eternal love story.
Kilukkam: Nandini has been attacked by a bull and she is bedridden. Joji, who till then had been at the receiving end of her shenanigans, feels an overwhelming sense of guilt at what he did. He sits next to her, remorseful, and feeling a strange fondness for this small chit of a girl. And then he sings her a beautiful lullaby—you know love is already in the air!
